"And shall wake soon and long for letters,
And none will hear the postman's knock,
Without a quickening of the heart,
For who can bear to feel himself forgotten?"
- The Night Mail by W. H. Auden
The excitement of waiting for post can be seen as synonymous with the expectation of a text or email. However the physical nature of handwritten correspondence is hard to replace. By exploring cultural connotations, perceptions of value and our communication behavior, my process has led me to create interventions that comment on these practices. By using skeuomorphs and evoking tradition, this project concentrates on reviving the ritual and joy of the handwritten letter.
