Precious waste

Lauren Goodenough

Just how precious can waste be?

Value can be perceived in many ways, perhaps attractive, practical, or sentimental. There are some objects that lose value after use; such as chewing gum, which depreciates upon tasting. The used gum is often discarded carelessly resulting in gum pollution.

What if those black spots on the street were transformed into Golden spots like a modern yellow brick road?

By coating chewing gum with edible 24-carat gold leaf, it becomes desirable and collectable. How would people's behaviour change around this 'fools gold'? Would you allow yourself to lose that value from your pocket?
